The History of Roebourne

Roebourne is more than just where we’re based — it’s our home, our history, and our heartbeat.

Roebourne, founded in 1866, is the oldest town in the North West of Western Australia. Located on the traditional lands of the Ngarluma people, Roebourne was established as a colonial settlement during the expansion of the pastoral industry and quickly became a regional administrative centre. However, its growth came at a significant cost to the Traditional Owners, who were displaced, marginalised, and subjected to government policies that profoundly impacted their lives and culture.

Despite the hardships, Aboriginal families remained connected to Country and continued to live in and around Roebourne, holding onto language, culture, and community. The town became a symbol of both the colonial past and the enduring spirit of its First Nations people.

Throughout the 20th century, Roebourne experienced a complex history marked by government interventions, forced removals, and mission control, but also by activism, cultural resurgence, and community strength. The struggles and achievements of Elders and leaders from Roebourne laid the foundations for what would become a powerful movement for Aboriginal-led change.

Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation (NBAC) was born out of this history. With roots in the 1970s community self-determination movement and formally incorporated in 2000, NBAC emerged as a response to the community’s need for a locally controlled organisation that could support well-being, employment, advocacy, and cultural connection.

Today, Roebourne is not just a historical location — it is a living, breathing community driven by the voices, knowledge, and aspirations of its people. NBAC continues to honour this legacy by creating opportunities, delivering services, and amplifying the strength of Roebourne through every enterprise and initiative it leads.

Roebourne’s story is one of survival, identity, and pride. It is a story that continues to unfold, shaped by generations of Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi people, and carried forward by organisations like NBAC, committed to building a future grounded in justice, healing, and hope.

Our History

We are proud to be 98% self-funded through our enterprises, injecting over $80 million in wages directly into the local economy over the past 11 years. Our model shows what’s possible when community drives the solution.

We are one of only three Indigenous corporations in WA’s top 20 that are not funded through land use agreements or government contracts — proof that social enterprise can create strong, sustainable change.
